For over 100 years, Combat Stress has assisted former servicemen and women dealing with issues including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression. Today, the charity provides “specialist treatment and support for veterans from every service and conflict, focusing on those with complex mental health issues.” https://www.combatstress.org.uk/
Combat Stress is a charity that is close to many people, including Sean Caven; a Trainer/Mentor with The Development Initiative Ltd (TDI). A former serviceman himself, Sean has committed to raising £10,000 for Combat Stress to assist in the great work that they do for Army personnel.
“It has been a year since I officially left the British Army and I have decided to raise money again for Combat Stress. I last took part in an event for Combat Stress in Iraq in 2018, where my colleagues and I completed a 10-mile march in memory of a soldier and friend that was sadly suffering with stress. The support we received from everyone back home in the United Kingdom (UK) was amazing, and just over £6,500 was raised for this charity. The family of our friend/soldier also received tremendous support.
This year, I have challenged myself to complete a marathon on Christmas day in Somalia whilst wearing full body armour. I have set a target to raise £10,000. This may be optimistic but what truly matters is providing help to those that need it along with raising awareness.
With just over 3 months until race day, training for the event is well underway. I have a plan in place that should prepare me for the marathon distance, whilst hopefully avoiding any unnecessary injuries. With the help of TDI, I am hoping to reach a wider audience and get more support for the event later this year. TDI has been very supportive of my goal so far.
2020 has been a challenging year and charities such as Combat Stress may not get the support that they so desperately need. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, their services remain critical and the demand for their assistance is always there. It is my hope that by completing this event, awareness of this charity will be raised again and that no soldiers or veterans have to suffer in silence from serving their country.”
